For decades, the traditional classroom has been organized in a face-forward orientation, with students observing and absorbing the teacher's directions. However, times have changed and the pedagogy continues to be challenged and shifted to increase student responsibility and control for their own learning. We are eager to offer more seat choices to our students as a way to increase their engagement with the curriculum, and also to increase the variety of modes in which we can deliver content. Seat choice is a small but powerful opportunity for students to gain a sense of self and control in the classroom community. This project seeks to increase flexible spaces within our classroom as a way for students to access the curriculum, as well as to give teachers more spaces to meet with struggling learners. In addition, this increases the flexibility for instructional design in our room. In our classroom, we have students who prefer walking, standing, or sitting on the floor, and each student who has chosen ‘their best place’ experiences a sense of success because they made that choice. This project will further our work with social-emotional learning in the classroom as well as meet the needs of our diverse population of scholars. Our new furniture will also decrease the amount of time we will have to pull struggling learners away from the classroom in order to pre-teach, re-teach, or provide content specific targeted instruction, which can feel isolating. With this project, we will be able to design meaningful layouts with specific spaces where we can work with struggling scholars amongst peers, and even access more learners. Through onboarding this project, we hope to instill a sense of community through student choice both within our classroom and the school large.
