As an educator, our goal is to create an environment of safety and trust for our students while also helping them to develop academically throughout the course of the year. Each year we see students who are more stressed and anxious, feeling the pressures of life that many of us didn't experience as a child. On top of that, the academic pressures continue to rise and students as early a elementary school are feeling the demands we are placing on them at such a young age. In my research of ways to best reach my students on a personal level so that I can create an environment of safety in my classroom, a constant topic continues to come up- Classroom Book A Day.
Classroom Book A Day allows the students to have a book read to them each day in a calm, inviting environment without the demands we place on them in a typical ELA setting. Students are able to be kids once again! They are given the opportunity to listen to a book and engage in meaningful conversation with their peers about it. Those conversations can be silly, serious, or anything in between....but they are authentic, and that is what is most important.
As a 5th grade teacher, my library is full of excellent novels, biographies of wonderful individuals, and well-loved series. What I am lacking is picture books. Through Classroom Book A Day, the students will read a picture book each day with me- 180 books read to them over the course of the year! In order to meet my goal of reading a new book each day, I am asking for help in purchasing some of these books. Thank you for helping me bring this exciting addition to my classroom!
