The mission of this project is to get kids reading and talking about books! Rather than dumped onto the book shelves all at once, these books will be featured a handful at a time through daily book talks with the intention of building interest and background knowledge. Students have the opportunity to borrow them and make their own recommendations to classmates through student book talks. Students read them during daily silent reading and even take them home. To expand their reading, I also read aloud daily. Informal follow up discussions also get the kids to talk about the book. Building my classroom library and promoting each title through daily student and teacher book talks, dedicated silent reading time, and read alouds will be sure to increase my reluctant readers' interest, knowledge, and purpose when visiting any library. Through the abundance of literary experiences this classroom library will provide, my fourth graders will no longer have to wander aimlessly through the school library bookshelves, but rather visit with a "shopping list" of titles in mind. Our book talks will encourage them to actually READ the books and share their thoughts.
