Traditionally, classrooms have consisted of rows of metal desks but today’s classroom environment is flexible. Classrooms can be changed from traditional aesthetics to a more collaborative, and engaging setting. One way to do this is through flexible seating in the classroom. Flexible seating is a way to differentiate the classroom and get students focused and engaged in learning. Flexible seating is beneficial for any classroom but it can be very beneficial in a special needs classroom. These items will be used to create a space in which students can foster and grow their creativity, critical thinking, and social-emotional skills. There are multiple seating options for students who require or prefer flexible seating arrangements. There is traditional options (e.g. stools, floor pillows, clipboards, and a floor rug) as well as more modern unique items (e.g. sitting balls, saucer chairs, and standing desks). These items were selected to create a welcoming classroom environment in which students feel welcomed, prepared to learn, and are encouraged and motivated to obtain academic success.
