The current school library is a dark and rather dismal space. We are in the basement, which receives very little light. The walls are paneled in dark wood and the shelves are old metal. Most of the shelves have become bent, and they are dangerously close to falling apart. The tables are very heavy, and tip if a student sits on them; and they have given up even trying to be leveled. The chairs are too big for kindergarten students, so they sit on an old carpet that is too small, and in an effort to give growing children more space, I have added a smaller grey rug that is flat out ugly. This project started as a desire to paint the dark paneling. I even have a donor for the paint. But we started to think about how to do that, and the first thing we have to do is move the shelves, and they are ready to fall apart, which is when the whole project falls apart. It is hard enough to get students to believe in a library program and the necessity for the lessons they are taught. They would be happier to come into a library that is bright and airy with new shelves, a colorful rug, and new tables.
