These flexible seating options will give my students an opportunity to have seating choices other than the traditional classroom desk and chairs that I currently have. Before I moved back to middle school, I was in a high school classroom that piloted various types of desk and chairs. At the end of the year when we ask students about the different options, they overwhelmingly stated how much they liked having various types of seating to choose from. From my observations, I believe that flexible seating can create a better classroom community and help with concentration. Flexible seating is an easy way to give students ownership of their learning and engage them in classroom activities. The only flexible seating options in my classroom have been purchases I’ve made at garage sales or other second hand stores, they are not designed for the regular wear and tear of school use. These new options have washable/wipeable materials made of tough, lasting fabrics that can handle a middle schoolers abuse. These seating options are often what students choose first when doing class work and I often need to create a rotation schedule to ensure those who want to sit there have the opportunity to. I know my students will be very excited to have more to choose from!
