I firmly believe that kids are not going to learn a single thing if, 1. They do not feel like you are invested in them, and 2. They are not comfortable in their environment. This is why I strive to make our classroom a comfortable environment for all students and let's be honest, the old school, bulky, uncomfortable desk are not making it easy for me! They limit the opportunities for collaboration amongst students and in a small classroom like mine, it limits my ability to effortlessly get to all of my students without tripping over backpacks that are taking up the already limited floor space. Even though middle schoolers are older, does not mean all their energy magically went away; sitting in those stationary desk all day is boring to them and makes them want to get up and move around even more. Which can be a distraction to other students and disrupt their learning. Offering flexible seating options like the ball chairs and wobble stools will give students the opportunity to move around but stay in their own space. These will also be great for the growing population of students who have ADHD and need to have the ability to move around. The wobbly cushions will have the same benefits of allowing for movement but limiting disruptions as the ball chairs and wobble stools. Students love to have choices and have that feeling of autonomy over their education. By simply offering them the choice of stools instead of chairs and letting them change their minds, gives them that independence and authority over their learning and when they are finally comfortable and know that their teacher cared enough to make that possible, is when the real learning begins!
