Something as simple as the seating students have available can change the dynamics of the room and the level of learning that takes place. Tables and chairs give us options for grouping students as needed: perhaps by skills, by topics interested in, by various strengths, etc... Asking students to think and work as pairs or groups while seating them separately is counterproductive. Flexible, collaborative seating allows students the opportunities to work together so they can develop and practice the writing and communication skills necessary for their futures. If funded, this classroom design will change our classroom possibilities. Students can work together to develop their writing and research skills, and they can discuss topics and application of ideas. I ask students to apply to schools, jobs or scholarships, and working together for peer feedback and help with editing can change how effective the students' work is. All students benefit from shared ideas and skills, and this is just one example. I share this one since it's a specific and beneficial purpose. Students typically are admitted to schools and programs or are awarded scholarships or successfully earn jobs using the documents they help one another create. I teach more than writing--it's communication in its many forms.
