The appliances we are requesting already have a home in the students' self-run Puma Cafe. Our students began their entrepreneurial journey with a Ninja coffee bar, a digital cash register, and supplies necessary to create the store, obtained through a Donor's Choose project last summer. In addition to creating beverages, our students have learned employable skills working in the cafe, such as: creating the menu in google docs, printing, and laminating it; working the various functions on the digital cash register, and properly stocking the dry and perishable products. The interactions they have with their customers each day allows our students to better their social functioning as well as practice their professional interactions.
Donations made to this project will allow us to expand the range and quality of products offered in the Puma Cafe and give us the means to teach the life skill of cooking in the classroom. As the cafe started to turn a profit, we were able to invest back into the business by purchasing a small espresso machine and a mini refrigerator/microwave. While these purchases allowed us to make a larger variety of drinks, the students would love to increase the speed with which they serve their customers and begin offering food items. Without access to a kitchen within our school, this goal has been, as of yet, impossible. Help the student baristas of the Puma Cafe realize their dream of creating a "real" coffee shop and gain employment and independent living skills vital to their future success.
