  • 21st Century Classroom

    Funded Sep 3, 2020

I am so excited to have received funding for this project. Your generosity made it happen in about 24 hours. I look forward to being able to move around during distance learning lessons, and giving my students the same option when we return to class. Once again thank you for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. De La Vega

  • Empower Choice and Sharing through Flexible Seating

    Funded Aug 21, 2019

I just wanted to update you on how the flexible seating is going in my classroom. The boxes arrived over a couple of days. I waited to open them in front of my students. I explained to them how we received such a gift and they understood your generosity. We were all equally excited and I hope you view the photos to see their faces! We decided on some guidelines, like wash your hands before using a seat, and where to put your regular chair.

In the beginning we had to make a list on the board to help the students take turns, but now they have figured out their favorites and in what setting and do a really great job of taking turns. They especially enjoy the seating when we go to the carpet. When we are in small groups, if someone is particularly wiggly I prompt them to get a seat and it's a great solution.

One 5th grade boy said he likes the comfy stool the best because it feels soft and is a comfortable seat to do his work on. Another 5th grade boy said he likes the wobble cushion most on the floor. A 3rd grade girl said she likes the wobble chair because she likes to rock.

I want you to know that your contribution really made a difference in my classroom environment, and I just can't thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. De La Vega

The best way to engage my learners is to consider their needs and empower them with a choice. Some of them need to rock back and forth (they can do this in a wobble chair). Some of them have sensory needs (that can be met with a wobble cushion or comfy stool). My students also need to improve their posture, core strength, and stamina. Many of them need to learn to improve their communication skills which would include negotiating, compromising and taking turns. Flexible seating meets these needs! When my project is funded, my learners will begin having seating options. Some of their needs will be met increasing engagement and motivation!
