Research shows that motivation is an integral part of adolescent literacy that is grossly overlooked and underestimated. Even the most studious kids struggle to make the choice to read when so many lures of technology are readily available. In a special education Language Arts classroom, many students do not identify themselves as readers. Your support to create "Literacy Swag Bags" will encourage reading and writing and ultimately improve student academic outcomes. What are Literacy Swag Bags? Literacy Swag Bags are durable bags that students will use to “shop” for reading materials each week. Each student will receive their own bag that they will use throughout the school year. Students can visit the classroom or school library and choose a book that fits their reading level and more importantly, their personal interests. Students are not limited to paper books, they can borrow magazines, pamphlets, audio devices or codes for e-books. Not only are the students allowed to choose 2-3 books for their Literacy Swag Bags, but they can also shop for their favorite reading resources like bookmarks, pencils, erasers, sticky notes, etc. How will Literacy Swag Bags help? Literacy Swag Bags are more than material objects. Your donation will foster ownership within the students as they manage their own literacy materials. Through this program, students learn more about what they enjoy reading, how to choose reading materials that fit their needs and gradually identify as readers. Furthermore, Literacy Swag Bags help to associate positive feelings toward reading that will lead to increased reading for enjoyment in and out school.
