Algebra 1 students will use graphing calculators to explore functions including linear, quadratic, and exponential. The graphing calculators allows students to see the similarities and differences between functions. Students will be able to see the differences between negative, positive, and zero slopes of linear functions. Students will be able to compare characteristics of linear functions that have different y-intercepts that have real world connections of initial fees vs no initial fees. Trigonometric functions in geometry are solved using graphing calculators, real world applications deal with building of ramps for the handicap and length of ladders to fight fires. Finding the distance and midpoints of line segments. Calculating the Pythagorean Theorem and using angle measurements, slopes, and lengths to prove what type is the given quadrilateral. Graphing calculators are the difference between driving and flying. Yes my students can still solve the problems without graphing calculators but to compete with students nationally they should have access to the same tools.
