It is no secret that education is changing. Long gone are the days of sitting in rows with pencils and workbooks, chanting facts in unison. Students today are asked to be much more thoughtful about their learning. Critical thinking and problem-solving are the goals of every learning activity as students move from being able to recall facts and words to being able to apply skills and concepts to solve real-world problems. By the time these students graduate and move on to college or the workforce, many of the jobs that they will be taking will be jobs that require someone who is able to think outside of the box and solve problems in ways we can not even yet imagine. This requires individuals who are imaginative, creative, inquisitive and persistent. My students have a wealth of creativity and imagination that is just waiting for an opportunity to break through! By providing them with these STEM materials to use throughout the school day, students will have opportunities to begin developing these skills. When using these materials, my students will have the opportunity to collaborate with one another, try something new, fail, and try again. They will be able to see the materials in new ways and explore their talents. Providing students with opportunities to use their creativity and imagination will have a positive effect on their academic and social-emotional learning. I can't wait to see and share what students are able to create!
