My third graders are diverse and are eager to learn but need to be motivated to grow in their education because of low socioeconomic and family conditions. My students need and want a variety of seating options to create an engaging environment that supports their diverse needs. We are in a mostly low-income military neighborhood. Many of the parents work at a nearby military base. However, many of the students face challenges in family structure and other situations both in and out of the classroom. As their teacher, I strive to foster their curiosity, love of learning, be sure that they feel safe and are engaged while learning. Flexible seating allows the students to take charge of their learning by making seating choices which work best for them. I know that with these additional flexible seating items, the children's capacity and excitement for learning will soar. During whole class learning, but especially during independent learning times, the students will choose a location that is best for them to see, hear, and participate in the learning situation. My students will choose to sit at a variety of locations: sitting or lying on the floor with a clipboard, sitting on top of the desk, or using these new materials. By making sure the student is comfortable both physically and emotionally, I've noticed that the attention levels are higher and longer which makes the students more engaged and increases learning levels. The students make good choices about where to sit and get more work completed versus sitting in a desk chair which is more confining. The products that I've chosen are easily moved, lightweight, and can be stored conveniently. These allow students to get the wiggles out while being attentive. All of the products can be easily used in all areas.
