My students attend a public K-8 school in a racially, ethnically, socio-economically diverse city. As a school counselor, I use a combination of play, art, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help my students develop the skills necessary to navigate the social emotional and academic demands of the school day. As a second year educator, I spent the majority of last year providing counseling services to my students remotely; I am so excited to create a therapeutic space where my students can process, question, learn, practice, and heal. I intend to use the requested books for whole class Social Emotional Learning lessons, as well as in small group and 1:1 sessions with students, to address topics about race, identity, equity, representation and racial justice. I love using bibliotherapy and art to help students develop the language and critical thinking skills necessary to engage effectively with the topics listed above. Many of my students benefits from access to fidget or sensory tools and calm spaces in order to regulate their bodies and minds. I will use the requested items to empower students to take ownership of their learning and advocate for the tools and spaces they need to be most successful. Many students are on incentive plans to reinforce and encourage positive behavior. The stickers will be used to positively encourage students for their hard work. Additionally, some students are working on portfolios to build self-esteem around their identity as learners. The stickers will also be used for the students to decorate their portfolios to reinforce their feelings of accomplishment.
