My students LOVE to read. On any given day, you’ll find my students with a nose in a book on the bus ride to and from school, during breakfast, or when they finish their work early and have a few minutes to spare. They use every minute to learn, and they know the single best way they can grow their brain is to Read, Baby, Read! Too often, however, my students don’t see themselves reflected in the books they read. While almost all of my students are black, the overwhelming majority of the books they read are written by white authors, feature white characters, and are told through a white perspective. All kids deserve to see themselves reflected in the books they read. Indeed, research shows that representation matters; when kids see themselves in books, they are more eager to read, they better understand what they read, and their self-image and self-confidence is bolstered. My students already love reading; please help them love themselves by giving them books that look like them!
