My students are energetic, caring, enthusiastic 8 and 9 year old learners. During this time of social upheaval in this immigrant community, it is more important than ever to create as safe space for students to come to each day. As a school, we are focused on using restorative practices with our students to strengthen the school community and the students connections with each other and the staff. Part of this work requires our classrooms to be an inviting and welcoming environment that they look forward to coming to everyday. Having a comfortable classroom shows kids that their teacher is invested in their education and in their general well-being. Adding a few of these items to my classroom is one way deliver that message. With the materials that I am asking for, this will help to create a cozy classroom environment with access to flexible seating that meets my students needs. Sitting for long hours on plastic chairs can be uncomfortable for young students and it is not ideal for their development. Children are often in motion and having the ability to move around the classroom to different locations helps them focus. Sometimes students just need a space away from their classmates to calm down. I am asking for clipboards so that my students will be able to work on the cozy carpet to help them to stay focused and do their best. Bean bags will help to include more students in my comfortable, focused, safe-space environment also. I am asking for fluorescent light covers to soften the harsh bright lights in the classroom and sheer curtains and lamps to create a more calming environment. Your donation will create a classroom environment that allows my students to learn comfortably, be productive, active, focused and feel safe coming to school.
