Students with significant physical needs, end up missing out on many experiences with their peers. Staff work hard to engage all students, but there are limited opportunities for a lot of the students to use standard motor equipment, as it is not safe. Students with limited mobility, have little control of where they will go and what experiences they will have, simply because they are dependent upon someone else to move their bodies. By having access to this adapted bicycle, students will be able to navigate where they want to go and play with their friends, without the need for an adult to move them. Giving these students some semblance of control in their chaotic, medically-complex life is invaluable. Additionally, this tool truly helps students to maximize their individual abilities. It is designed to allow children to use their arms and legs, together, to propel. The hand and foot pedals make this bike more accessible for students who may not have the leg strength to propel. It also offers options for significant modifications with removable supports, to increase adaptability for students with different physical needs. Not only will this bike offer the opportunity for irreplaceable social experiences, it will also provide significant therapeutic benefits. It is a fun and motivating tool to promote increased strength in the trunk and extremities, increased coordination, improved body and environmental awareness, increased endurance and better postural control. Students would be able to work on therapy goals during activities including recess and physical education. By providing an adapted bicycle for students with varying levels of physical abilities, students will have the rare chance to be active kids.
