Does the memory of 6th-grade math scare you? Not in my class. I use the resources students need to succeed and feel accomplished. The whiteboard easel will provide a designated small group learning environment and allow me to model math strategies. The easel will allow me to demonstrate skills in a secluded area for students that are struggling. It will also allow students to show their mathematical thinking so I can see where their misunderstandings occur and can begin to correct those misconceptions. The hands-on manipulatives I chose will help engage my learners in my small groups, so I can begin to fill in the educational gaps created during distance learning. The manipulatives are crucial for a hands-on experience to help these students make connections with multiplication and fraction concepts. In my 6th-grade math class, we use literature to introduce new skills. By using the magnetic book holders, I can display these books so students can access them. I will use the magnetic organizational containers as a way for my students to retrieve supplies needed to complete assignments and projects. The containers will hold math tools such as compasses, rulers, and calculators. Once students have mastered a skill and an assessment is given, I like to reward their hard work with items such as smelly stickers. Let's be honest...smelly stickers bring out the kid in all of us. These items will help me deliver a hands-on learning experience while teaching the standards they need. (5.NBT.B.7, 5.NF.A.1, 6.NS.A.1) "Mrs. Deer HELP, I can't remember how to...!" is a plea I have heard too many times this year. They will be able to have a hands-on, face-to-face, small focus group. This focus group time will fill skill deficits that are impacting their success in moving forward with mathematical concepts.
