Literature acts as both a window and a mirror. Literature can serve as a window into an experience that is different from the readers', providing a new perspective and the opportunity to build empathy and understanding. But, it can also be a mirror, reflecting and validating the identity of the reader, providing a deeper understanding of self and others. The purpose of this project and fundraiser is to bring both mirrors and windows to my students. My hope is that by bringing texts that are both relatable and complex to students, I can help my students to see themselves as confident and empathetic readers. Students will self-select texts and work in groups to read, write, and discuss important themes, authorial techniques, and explore what it means to be "American" in our modern society.
By donating to our project, you will be providing students with the choice and opportunity to build their sense of identity as readers. Each book donated will be treated with care and revered in our classroom. The first step to increase reading ability is to increase volume of reading. In order to increase volume of reading, students must be inspired to read and see themselves as confident and empathetic readers.
The texts have been carefully selected to provide a diverse range of experiences to students. The texts explore topics of immigration, police brutality, racial injustice, racial identity, overcoming Eurocentric beauty standards, and gender roles. These texts provide students with characters that reflect their identities, young people who are unapologetically themselves and "American" regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, home language, etc.
