Using teacher input and behavioral data, we see a strong need as a school for social and emotional learning for our students. While the behavior data is easy to gather using tools we already have, finding meaningful ways to measure and address social/emotional needs can be more challenging. As educators, we all want our students to succeed, but not all of our students have the social skills to navigate the classroom and playground successfully. The news is full of stories related to violence or aggression perpetrated by people who do not have good social skills and have emotional difficulties. We hope by helping to identify and address these issues in elementary school, we can set our students on a successful path for middle school, high school, and beyond. With an online social/emotional screener I have a good tool to help with the identification. A tablet/laptop with touchscreen capabilities will be a valuable asset as I go to classrooms and have students take the screener individually. But technology is just one small part as we need to address the student needs. For that we need research-based materials/lessons to assist students so that they grow. I have the space to work with small groups of students but lack some key materials and supplies. Research shows that social and emotional learning can reduce aggression and emotional distress in students as well as improve academic performance. My hope is to see this in our students who are struggling socially, emotionally, or both. These students are a part of our school family and we hope the tools from this project help them soar!
