As the needs of students change, so should the environment of our classrooms. Students need movement, they need to be able to easily brainstorm and share new ideas, and they need a classroom environment that supports them in their individual learning styles.
A big part of school is preparing students for work in a 21st century world, where collaboration, flexibility, and teamwork are at the forefront. These community tables would allow students to constantly build, use, and apply these necessary skills in their day to day learning. They will build confidence to share their ideas and a deeper understanding of how to make decisions that will allow them to succeed. By replacing the traditional desks with large community tables, the way the students learn would be completely transformed.
In an article written by the National Education Association, it says that, “Students know how they learn best. Give them credit for the knowledge they bring to the classroom, and make them partners in the creation of a positive instruction climate.” Allowing the students to have the ability to make decisions about where they learn and how they work, can significantly change their outcomes. By providing students with the capability to take ownership over where they learn, their level of engagement, as well as the pride they take in their work, can increase dramatically.
Take an active role in being a part of transforming the way students learn, collaborate, and grow as 21st century learners. Help us ditch our traditional desks and embrace a new way of learning.
