Help me give my students work centers to increase fine motor, literacy, and math skills! I teach a kindergarten and first grade special education class in San Diego, CA. My students have a range of abilities and so many strengths! They need opportunities to demonstrate their skills through multiple modalities to learn. I support students with specific learning disabilities, autism, Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. Each of my students learn in very different ways and need individualized supports to meet their learning goals. My students benefit from 1:1 instruction, small group instruction, repetition and benefit from hands on learning activities that promote student engagement. This year, I hope to set up specific work areas that focus on hands on activities, foster independence and help students take ownership of their learning. To do so, I am creating a STEM station which focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. I also will create a dramatic play station which focuses on allowing students to explore different careers and jobs through play. My last station focuses on writing and literacy skills where students are able to explore language and practice newly learned skills with hands on learning activities. These stations are so important to help create a student-centered learning environment and allow my students the best opportunity to learn.
