  • Outbreak Alert: Engineering a Pandemic Response

    Funded Jun 17, 2019

Thank you for helping my students to get the Pandemic Response kit!

The introductory activity of building a quarantine box for a virus was a challenge for them in many ways! Students had to make decisions about working together, then they had to deal with some of the issues that come up when all the members of a group either do not agree on an idea, or don't necessarily have the same work habits and motivation.

After helping a few of them move toward solving some of their initial problems, all groups were able to successfully complete the challenge. For some, it was an experience of personal growth, as they had to take on new roles that were not comfortable or always easy. For every student it was the out-of-a-seat hands-on adventure they crave. Testing the boxes was the most exciting part! Students loved seeing how their box worked, and huddled around to peer into them as the UV light was shined inside to illuminated any spilled "virus".

Now we are on to making a model virus, investigating its spread, and engineering an antivirus to stop it!”

    With gratitude,

  • Sit Tall, Stand Tall

    Funded Jul 19, 2019

My students were so excited to see the boxes with the Kore Wobble seats arrive this week! I put one together as soon as I could, and they excitedly took turns trying it out. The real excitement came the next morning, when I asked a few students at the end of class if they wanted to unpack the other four stools.

They opened the boxes carefully, but once inside were pulling out the paper packaging materials in a frenzy! I thought they would just get the parts out and put them on a lab table. One minute they were taking things out, and in what seemed like an instant I looked again and the other 4 stools were put together and had kids moving around on them while they engaged in conversation with each other.

Thank you so much for bringing them into our classroom! These kids have so much energy, and needed another way to expend it during class!”

    Funded Aug 12, 2019

Thank you for investing in the young people of our city! Your generous gift will help kids to stay focused on their #1 job: learning! They could not believe it when I told them about the cool things they will be getting soon, and they are excited to try something different!”

  • Students See the Light!

    Funded Jul 18, 2019

The new safer, working, and lighted microscopes are fully funded thanks to you! My students don’t even know how lucky they are yet, but I will be sure to tell them! Thank you for giving to my classroom! It is people like you who’d truly make a difference!”

  • Microorganisms Are All Around Us!

    Funded Jul 10, 2019

What a fantastic day this is! I am overjoyed to be able to share with students the rich learning opportunities that this project will provide! Students will love taking pictures of germs from their own hands as they grow, and I know that analyzing their own germs using the photographs and special software will be an incredible and authentic experience! Thank you for giving all of this to my students!”

    Ms. Stevey

I want to give energetic or ADHD students options for how they sit in my classroom. Kids who have flexible seating in classrooms are more engaged because they feel like they have choices. Some kids need to lean, flex, and move around a little more, even in a 57 minute period! When the core is engaged, this improves breathing, which improves focus. Kids who like to habitually lean in a chair will benefit because these are safer for them. A traditional chair is unsafe to lean in, and I have seen one student too many take a horrible, embarrassing fall.
