I am a firm believer that if you want a child's reading to improve, you need to put in the time. In my class we spend a half hour each day in a highly engaged reading setting. We call it our "Patriot time" and students love it. During this time we break up into small groups based on our individual needs and learning styles. Each group is working on a different reading skill and each group is greatly improving at that particular skill. Whether it be fluency, phonics, accuracy or comprehension, the students know their goal and strive to achieve it. A kindle Fire can open up doors and push each and every student even higher. With a Kindle Fire we can use apps such as "word runner" to build on students fluency. As students increase their reading speed, they also increase their desire to read. The more a student wants to read, the more they will read. The more they read, the more fluent they become. It's a loop that keeps on giving. A Kindle Fire can also increase our reading selection. One eBook can be shared to numerous Kindles at the same time. This means that more students can be reading the same book at once. This will increase conversations among students, and students love talking to one another about what they have just read. Finally, a Kindle Fire has the ability to play audio books. Many of my students would love to read the next "Dog Man" but aren't fluent enough yet to do so. The ability to listen to a story while simultaneously reading the written text, can build reading skills, confidence, and the love of reading. This project can be a huge stepping stone that sets us all on an incredible journey.
