One of the most exciting parts of teaching kindergarten is I get to be one of the first teachers to affect my students’ opinions of learning and education. I always want my students to be excited about the learning process. Some ways that I make learning fun are to provide activities that include hands-on, engaging activities. Through these activities, my students can use their creativity and problem-solving skills. Learning is social. I also like to provide opportunities for my students to work individually, in partners, or in small groups. I plan to use the Osmo to encourage collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking in our classroom. I am hoping the open-ended play opportunities will encourage natural collaboration and communication amongst my students. The development of these social-emotional skills is becoming more important. Osmo also uses unlimited solutions to encourage students to think outside the box and find their own unique answers. This opportunity for creativity is very exciting and motivating for my young students. Finally, the learning through play encourages the students to think critically in a safe way. The hands-on problem-solving opportunities provide the right amount of challenge while pushing them to continue learning. I plan to give my students opportunities to use these hands-on learning tools throughout the entire school day. Some opportunities will include bellwork to start the day, review of topics previously taught, independent center work, and a free-time choice. The students will be able to use the Osmos individually, in partnerships, and in small groups.
