I want to use this class set of books for reading practice and as the basis of discussions in small group and whole group, as well as their writing. This book is extremely relevant for my students. Binti is a science fiction story about a girl who is the first of her people to go to the most prestigious university in all of space. Many of the students that come through our community also end up being first-generation college students. I think they will connect to this part of Binti and are hopefully inspired to continue their education after high school. Also, Binti is a person of color, and it's so important that students see aspects of themselves represented in the literature they read. Lastly, our standard novel for our district is the 1993 novel The Giver--a great book but an older one. I want students to see what science fiction looks like in this decade. Binti is a great example. Please donate and help make this science fiction unit possible for my students and me!
