These materials will help my students learn by being both a mirror and a window for them. The students will be able to see their identities represented in the books and feel empowered and valued as a student in class. This is called a mirror for students. The students may not be able to personally relate to the characters in all of the texts, but can learn about authentic experiences and stories from people of other cultures, backgrounds, and identities. This is called a window, and is critical for students to have exposure to. In order to be appreciative of other people, students need to be open to learning about them and this can be done through the texts they read. This can also encourage other students to share their own cultural background with their classmates adding personal anecdotes to the conversation. Mirrors and windows are essential for every classroom library so that student identities are showcased and they can become more accepting of others. I will use these texts to teach my students about kindness, acceptance and inclusion of all people. I believe that having mirrors and windows in a classroom puts students on a path to pursue justice and inspires them to create change.
