Ready for First Grade!
Funded May 15, 2024This year we have started off with high hopes and lots of new things. This class has really been one in a million. Thank you for all the extra things that you donated, like my very first blue tooth speaker. There is a new app that allows for background sounds to books as you read those books aloud, we call it magically reading. You also provided new books that I'm using for read aloud.
Secondly, all the storage items that were donated has helped out so much with organization and storage of all materials. Every morning students pick books to read. This is so much easier because of the storage tubs provided. These tubs are divided into three different sections. This allows for easier viewing and selecting.
When preparing for this year, it was in the back of my mind this could be my last year. I wanted to have some things that were my heart's desires. When my students this year write in their journal they have the journals with the writing lines on the bottom of the page and the drawing section on top. I have always wanted to be able to have this type of journal. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Funded Apr 6, 2024I know this thank you is later than expected but we are just now starting to use those donations that you sent last spring.
This year our school is doing another One Book One School project and we will be reading the book, The Lion of Mars. That is why when asking for donations I asked for many space items. After counting all those items we came up with over 1000 items for the students at my school.
Sometimes it is difficult to get needed materials but for those extra exciting materials it can be impossible. It has been such a blessing to the kids at our little country school to have people support our adventures. For those who gave when we did our dinosaur project, or Appalachian project, the kids still talk about those activities.
I can't wait to see what things the kids will learn and what they will buy with their Mars Money. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Miley

Funded Nov 28, 2023Thank you for the allowing our school and community the opportunity to participate in one of the best projects, called "One School/ One Book"! It was evident right from the start that everyone at school was excited, because on launch day the teachers put on a skit about the book and every student received a copy of the book, a small dinosaur egg to hatch at home, a bookmark and a small dinosaur figurine. This project was called our Community Book Club because two days out of the week parents had to read a chapter to their child/children, then the teacher was to read one chapter per week as well. It wasn't until we did the end of the project survey of the parents, to really understand the impact of One School/ One Book.
Below are some responses from parents about their favorite part of doing this project:
"Reading together as a family."
"Seeing my child grow curious and ask question about new topics".
"Seeing my child excel in reading".
"Bonding with my child while we read together".
"It was hard to wait to read the next chapter, we were so curious to find out what would happen next".
"I could read with all my kids at the same time".
"Kids earning Dino Dollars to buy things at the Dino Store for participating in the reading".
There are so many more positive notes from parents and because it was a huge success we have already decided that we want to make this a project for next school year too. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you...Your donation has made an impact!”

Ms. Miley

Funded May 9, 2023Thank you for allowing me to offer exciting and creative activities for my students. The supplies donated allowed them to learn about their five senses, art and drawing, building with LEGOS, and exploring with gears.
We are given an amount of money each year for the basic supplies and for few extras, but with the help of your giving to Donors Choose, there were so many more supplies, to help them do hands on learning activities that they will never forget.
There are so many times I have kids tell me, I wish I was still in your class. I know it is because of the all the exciting projects we do that allows them to explore and grow their brains....and as we say in my room, " If your eyes are twinkling, your brain is growing". We have lots of twinkling eyes because of your donations.”

Funded Sep 18, 2022Our STEAM project is off and running. Thank you for the support you provided to make this project a success. Our school kick off was in October. We had presenters from Kanawha County Schools, Dow Industries, West Virginia State University, The Clay Center of Arts and Science, West Virgina Division of Natural Resources, along with the faculty and staff of our school. Now we have STEAM days once a month to provide students the experience of learning what each letter of STEAM represents. S-Science, T-Technology, E-Engineering, A-Art, M-Math The grade level teachers are providing exciting hands on experiences with the expectation that the students will become the experts. When we have our culminating STEAM day students from each grade will be teaching the other grades what they have learned about STEAM. The donations have been used as prizes and learning materials to help with specific projects. Your donations have made a difference in the experiences of the students in my school. Thank you so much for your support and the overwhelming love I feel from each and everyone of you who donated to this project is such a blessing. On a side not our school applied for a STEAM grant and we were approved! We are now in the process of making a classroom into a STEAM room.”

STEAM Ahead by Saving, Shopping, and Sharing!
Funded Aug 19, 2022This has been one of the best learning experiences for not just my students but for the whole student body. We had a huge STEAM kick off in October with an all day STEAM DAY. Visitors were invited from the community to come and present lessons to our students. Visitors came from Kanawha County Schools, West Virginia State University, Dow Industries, West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, and The Clay Center for Arts and Sciences of West Virginia. They paired up with all the staff who also presented hand on activities. Students have learned what STEAM means and how a scientist thinks, as we use the scientific method to solve problems. There are things scheduled for each month with a full day for each letter in STEAM. We just completed our S- Science day. All grade levels worked together to provide their students with science activities. We will continue until all the letters have been introduced and taught. T-Technology, E- Engineering, A-Art, M-Math. In first grade we worked on more than one letter to provide many opportunities to make STEAM concrete in their minds. As students work during the year, the prizes that you provided, fosters excitement and an opportunity to earn as they learn. Thank you to everyone who donated money to provide a magical experience for these kids.”

Funded Jun 2, 2019Thank you for donating these LEGOS to my classroom. This has not only benefited my students but it has been used by students in all grade levels in my school. I am able to offer a LEGO learning club to the students.
The students were so excited and most definitely interested in the LEGOS from the first time the learning club was offered. Their creativity and imaginations worked to create many different things from words, towers, and cars to space vehicles.
This year and for the years to come I'm hoping to have a LEGO learning club at my school.”
