The reading environment should be welcoming and engaging. I want my classroom environment to be one of comfort and flexibility. With new flexible seating opportunities, students will become more active participants in their own learning. The spaces that will be created in our ELA classroom will allow students to share and discuss with each other what they read and write and allow for collaboration to include feedback from their peers. Students have been involved in the planning of the redesign of the classroom. Weeding outdated books, creating wish lists to fill gaps in the library, and restructuring the physical space in the classroom. They have decided to include a community space in the plan which we hope will include a rug and a few comfortable chairs. Also, they have designed a collaboration space and multiple small areas for independent and partner reading with lighting and various seating options. I have recently implemented classroom book clubs this year. This has been extremely rewarding and eye-opening. By providing access to books, free choice in the selection of texts and time to read in class the conversations around books has grown tremendously! The students embraced this type of learning environment. I plan on creating more book clubs next year that delve into social issues, historical time periods and graphic novels. I have new books on the way to support this venture. The items purchased for this project will help me create an engaging environment that will promote the love of reading. I plan on creating a reading station as well as collaborative sharing table in which my students will spend time talking about literature. I cannot wait to see what my newly renovated classroom will look like!
