Alternative, flexible seating allows children to wiggle and focus while learning. My goal is to have different style seats throughout the room to allow children a change from their "normal," student chair. This year in my classroom I used stools, carpets, yoga mats with clipboards, and yoga balls. It was successful in making the students more comfortable, giving them a chance to get their wiggles outs, and engaged them in their work. The students quickly gained responsibility for the choices they make while using these seats, and almost always made good choices while working. My students deserve to learn the best way they can. Whether that be bouncing, laying, or sitting criss cross on a cushion. This year I will be moving to Kindergarten from second grade; yoga balls may not be the best choice anymore as the smallest ones are still quite large. These yoga donuts are the perfect replacement to reinforce stability, safety, but still allow them to wiggle. Bands on their chairs let them move their feet quietly to refocus their mind. Tree trunk cushions give them a natural feeling reading zone in the library. Sit spots show them exactly where their area is on our carpet everyday. I have seen that these alternative seating arrangements engage my learners every day, while also making them feel more comfortable. I hope these seats will help them see their classroom as their home away from home and encourage them while they grow.
