English teachers around the country are struggling to engage their students in literature. Let's face it: kids aren't reading books anymore. The trend in our subject is to teach authors that aren't white and aren't dead. My hope is to offer a novel that is about a culture far different from their own but also one they can relate to in terms of what it means to be human. Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, is an "Afghan version of the American immigrant experience." It is both a political chronicle and a personal tale about how choices in childhood affect us long into our adult lives. I hope to draw my students away from their devices and into this breathtakingly honest portrayal of humanity.
