The seven year olds who walk into a second grade classroom have lots of wiggles to get out, which can interfere with their ability to focus and concentrate on learning. This is especially true of students with special learning needs like the ones who walk into my inclusive classroom. These kiddos want to learn, but need to move too. Flexible seating options provide all students the opportunity to better concentrate on their learning, while 'getting their wiggles out' and allowing them to assert independence and responsibility over their daily choices. As a replacement to traditional desks where student movement is restrictive, flexible seating like yoga balls, wobble chairs, wobble cushions, pillows, bean bags, saucer chairs, couches, and stools provide students with a choice of the environment that they will learn best in. Choice is huge for engagement and learning! It helps students feel more responsible for themselves. Students will choose what seating options work best for them daily. The perk is that most of these alternative options provide students to opportunity to bounce, wiggle, wobble, rock, and sway while listening to instruction and working independently. There is no better way to help with the natural need to move and teaching children to make their own choices than flexible seating!
