Seeing Ourselves in Nature
Funded May 28, 2019Thank you again for all of your generosity in donating individual copies of Desert Solitaire to our classroom. Since we began reading earlier in the month, students have engaged with the text in so many different ways, including: structured academic debates, one-pager visual representations about their relationship with nature, nature writing, and rhetorical analysis.
We read classics in high school literature--and for good reason. But my students are on the cusp of adulthood, and each day they are working to make their own choices, socially, politically, morally., and finding their voice is very important. This novel has allowed students the ability to be open to a narrator that is imperfect, opinionated, and motivated, and it has encouraged them to reflect on their own voice, and their own persona, while studying that of Edward Abbey.
The conversations and thoughtful moments provided by this text are invaluable, and for that we will be forever grateful.”
With gratitude,

Funded May 17, 2019First, thank you again for your generous contributions to our classroom. The books donated have already made an impact on our classroom, engaging students in discussions about activism, eco-terrorism, symbiotic and parasitic relationships, and much more.
After reading the first three chapters of your donated novel, Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey, students have drawn a physical representation of their own relationship with nature, engaged in a structured academic argument, and spent three separate times in the outdoors, reflecting on what they see, feel, and understand about their role in this ever-changing environment.
These moments are critical in our classroom--not only for meeting skills in writing and reading, but for growth as a body of people. Your generosity has made dynamic moments in our classroom and daily lives possible, and we are so grateful.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Ras
