One of the most important aspects of a classroom is for children to feel welcome, like they are coming to their own home every day. The photo I chose is of a random blank classroom that is not at all welcoming. This is not a good environment for young, impressionable students to learn well in. Flexible seating gives students a more homey feeling, plus it gives students a personal choice and better options than sitting on a hard chair for hours. I would like to make my classroom as inviting and welcoming as possible to promote a sense of belonging to the students I serve who come from disadvantaged homes. Students should enjoy learning. The more they have fun learning, the more buy-in they will have and the more attentive and productive they will become. First graders have an extremely short attention span and the lessons and environment need to be adjusted for their little spongy brains to soak up all the materials being thrown at them. If students in first grade get a good start on their education, they will have a much easier educational path in their future. Student collaboration is key for students to comprehend the materials being taught. Students sitting together in a comfortable location is good for learning even in adults. Students in colleges gather together in comfortable seating arrangements to study the material and help each other out. It is the same for younger children. I want the students to work together to take full advantage of the materials provided and the help of their peers. I feel this takes careful planning by the instructor and preparing the classroom setting is the first and one of the most important steps.
