Our 6th grade classroom does some awesome STEM projects. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics have been a primary professional learning focus in our school. Our students love collaborating with one another as they engineer sailboats, bridges, towers, marshmallow launchers, 3D living cells. What better way to guide inquiry based learning than through the use of a Makerspace? Each year, my colleagues and I provide our students with the materials they need for these projects. When we introduce the variety of materials, the kids go wild! They can't wait to get their hands on the items they can use to make their visions come to life. Our students are asked to make sailboats with specific measurement requirements. The aluminum foil sheets will be put to great use as a waterproof material for them to use. The poster board can be cut up and utilized as a base for their bridges and towers. The craft sticks are great for marshmallow launches. The composition notebooks will be used when students are drawing their designs and tracking measurements. The cotton twine will hold their amazing creations in place. Lastly, the 7-tier, 16 bin rack shelving will be the perfect place to store all of these awesome materials and will provide easy access! Our students learn SO much from these activities and we love watching what they come up with! All of these supplies will allow us to stock up our makerspace and provide them with the best opportunities to learn in our classroom.
