First Grade is a year full of growth and wonder. Reading foundation skills are critical at this early level. My students learn best when they make connections with real world experiences, are actively engaged in conversation, and make connections from one story to another. This year we expanded our thematic units and saw great results. In previous years, students gained knowledge in letter-sound recognition and phonemic awareness such as rhyming. However, they had difficulty applying those skills to reading passages and independent reading. Using thematic units this year, along with poems and trade books and rich real aloud stories, students began applying that phonics knowledge when reading grade level texts. I have chosen themes that easily integrate science, social studies, and math. By expanding the use of fairy tales and other thematic units, students should better understand the purpose for learning letter sounds and better apply the skills during their daily reading. The files will allow for organization of the thematic units and help make the materials accessible for my students. Please help instill the importance of learning and reading to my first grade students.
