Flexible seating is a research-supported way to engage students more fully in their learning by providing them more autonomy in the classroom. Students enter the classroom and self-select their seating choice based on where they will work the most productively. Giving students a chance to self-monitor themselves is an essential soft skill that flexible seating allows. Flexible seating allows my students to have choice and voice inside the classroom provides them with greater ownership and personal investment in their learning. When students are able to self-select and freely change their seating choice throughout the day, they not only are more on task and productive, but they are able to self-monitor and exercise their self-control muscles that they are building in this important developmental year. I am currently researching the effects of flexible seating on student achievement for my thesis project. The research I have been doing shows a correlation between flexible seating and achievement in academic and social-emotion development of students. I carefully selected these seating options based on hours of research on what works best within the classroom. These seating choices are all able to be moved around the classroom to be used in many different ways. Supporting this project will support my students and their flexible seating school year. Thank you!
