With this book, we will be able to have in depth book club discussions where students take on different roles as we read. This will increase engagement, purpose, and responsibility as we read. Students will be able to see a protagonist of color and learn more about the the struggle of maintaining identity when torn between two settings. Students will be able to write about their reading and write a literary essay comparing this text to the popular film, The Hate You Give, to compare common themes and struggles students of color face daily when they are in a different setting.
