Integrating technology into the elementary classroom will help prepare students to thrive in an increasingly technological world. It is crucial that we teach students to think critically, persevere, problem solve, collaborate and develop digital literacy. By combining technology with the rigorous content students are already working hard to learn, I can extend their learning to meet the needs of the twenty-first century environment.
Spheros and MERGE Cubes can bring our learning to life! These pieces of technology would offer students a creative way of expressing, applying and connecting to what we are already learning in class. For example, I want to combine our understanding of measurement in math to coding a Sphero. We would get a firm understanding of our basic, fourth grade math concepts, then have the opportunity to apply them to a fun, student-led activity with a Sphero. Students would need to demonstrate an understanding of angles and measurements of speed, length and time to code a Sphero correctly through a maze. With the MERGE Cubes, students could enhance their understanding of various text by examining an article's topic in 3-D. For example, recently, we read a nonfiction article about the decreasing population of amphibians. Our learning would have been heightened by being able to research a rare frog and then through the augmented reality of a MERGE cube, hold it in our hands.
The opportunity to integrate technology into our classroom, would provide an endless amount of creative and engaging experiences for my students. Spheros and MERGE Cubes will ultimately extend and deepen our learning, while helping build the characteristics of a twenty-first century leader!
