As a high school teacher I have recognized such a strong need for change to the traditional classroom. I teach American Sign Language and I will soon be piloting a new course Global Citizenship. This course is a mandatory graduation requirement; the key purpose is to help students learn about themselves, who they are and what they believe. By knowing themselves, we then take a journey to see how they fit within their school community, their neighborhood, and globally. We have had an increase in verbal and physical altercations in our area and we as a district have realized our students are in need of some very specific skills. This class is meant to teach students to look inside themselves, before looking at others- my goal is to give them a space to learn, adapt and grow as comfortably as possible. Teaching them that we have more in common than they think and that it is OK to disagree with someone but there are better ways to do it than with their fists. I am a newer teacher so my supplies and resources have not accumulated much. Seeing the impact flexible seating, appropriate supplies, and books has made this past year, I have only become more motivated to provide them a safer, more loving environment; enhanced with the things they need to effectively find themselves and be part of something bigger.
