When asked, sixth-grade students overwhelmingly said that their #1 problem at middle school was figuring out their lockers. The students often didn't have experience opening combination locks before, and it was hard for them to figure it out on the spot when they had a million other things on their mind that first week of middle school. Students said that the lockers made them late for class (giving a bad impression) and it frustrated them (upsetting them, which was not conducive to setting up a mindset to learn). These padlocks will be used to get the students familiar with how to open their lockers so that they can start their days at the new school with one less (huge) worry! They will be able to focus on navigating the school and their learning environments rather than on their lockers. This transition program, covered over six weeks, will also include how to organize a backpack, how to talk to teachers, and will incorporate current middle schoolers' advice on how to have a happy transition. The cost of the combination locks is very important, and it is the only cost that this brand new transitional program will have. The program will last for years to come.
