I teach English as a Second Language to students from many countries. I am excited this year to have my first student from China. I also have/had students who are refugees from Syria. My current student and her older siblings are all planning on qualifying as doctors with the goal to return to Syria to open a clinic to help others when, and if, peace returns. Many students have escaped the violence of their home countries and are making their new life in the USA. My job including advocating for my students, helping them adjust to their new country while celebrating their home countries. I also moved to the USA from England so I know some of the challenges of home sickness and adapting to a different culture. Though I did not have to learn to speak English I was previously a high school French teacher.
