Students will be able to use the waders to get into the creek and see the fish swimming, the water bugs moving and the water flowing. They will use the nets to catch and release insects after looking at and identifying them. They will use the containers to take water samples back for later inspection under the digital microscopes and the books will help to introduce and refer back to during the lessons. This lesson outdoors lets us discuss a wide variety of areas such as, food webs, ecosystems, the water cycle, rocks, weathering and erosion, and how humans impact those areas. We take a trip as a class to our nearby creek and explore with the help of volunteers. A Science Biology Professor from our local college, a Wildlife Ranger, and BlueThumb coordinator comes and talks to the students along with myself as they move from stations to stations learning and exploring different areas of the creek. They get hands on experience with on the spot information to any questions that they have. This is an opportunity to get lots of state standards taught in a fun and memorable way.
