As a first year teacher, I have a daunting list of supplies that my students and I need for our classroom. On this list you will see items that I find vital to have in order to help my student's succeed. First are magnetic letters. I plan to use these during Daily 5 rotations during word work. I also will use them during guided reading groups. I have seen great success in having students not only write sight words, but also build them using the magnetic letters. Students will be able to process through which letters are needed and how letters can be arranged to create target words. Next on my list is a classroom mailbox. This is an item that I find essential in maintaining a well-run classroom. I will use this to deliver parent information as well as completed student work to students before they put it in their take home folder. Next is colorful book bins. Each student will have a book bin that will hold the books they are currently reading. Every week they will switch out their books from my classroom library. These book bins will give them a safe place to keep their books and will allow them to move around their room with their books when it is time to read. Lastly (and most importantly) is wobble cushions. My mentor teacher had these in her classroom and I fell in love with them. These give students the opportunity to keep both feet on the ground while moving back and forth quietly in their seat.
