Reading is an important element in life, no matter where a young person goes. We read to learn, for enjoyment, to become better people. Unfortunately, school can sometimes turn students away from reading; they learn to hate the simple act of reading. My goal is to help students remember the enjoyment they can find in reading for pleasure. However, that is easier said than done! The moment I tell students "Okay, we are going to go down to the library to check out books", I've lost over half of my class. The library is scary and overwhelming. But, when I print pictures and post on my board new books that are in my class library or we have free time, without a fail my "non-readers" will finally venture back and feel they are in a safe enough place to find a book that interests them. That is why it is so important to me to have a wide variety of diverse novels available in my classroom. I want each student who walks into my room to be able to find a book that they can relate to, that pushes them to be better readers, that excites them!
