It's Time for an Auditorium Piano Upgrade

Funded Jun 4, 2019

When the new piano arrived my students were so excited! This was the first time they had seen such a beautiful instrument up close. Our old piano was very worn out and barely playable. I demonstrated some music we were learning in class and their faces lit up. I even let the more advanced keyboard students perform their own compositions on the new instrument.

Since the school year began we have been using the piano for chorus rehearsals and general music classes. One specific moment was when I was teaching the various instrument families of the orchestra. When we classified the piano, the student were curious how a string instrument could be placed in the percussion family. I took the students to the auditorium, opened the top of our new piano, and showed them how the hammer mechanisms work.

The next steps for my students is to each compose their own short melody in the classroom keyboard lab. I will then chose a number of students from each class to perform their original work on the new piano in front of their peers.”
