This past spring, my students were given a STEM project to redesign their classroom. In this STEM project, they collaborated with our school's learning coach, our principal, each other and of course, myself. They had to complete questionnaires from their classmates and research how classroom designs would impact their learning styles. They were thrilled to be given the opportunity to work on this project! They were creative, engaged and very productive knowing they were responsible for the outcome of what our new classroom will look like. The collaboration groups included reading/library center, math corner, collaboration station, wall design, and flexible seating. They then recreated their classroom design by building it out of Legos and making a 3-D poster of it. After several weeks of hard work and receiving feedback from our learning coach and principal, they got to remodel! Demo Day was a kid's dream come true! It was a mess! However, like they say, to make anything better, it has got to look worse, first. They moved furniture in, out and took everything off the walls. It was definitely a work in progress for about a week. But in the end, we all loved the classroom design, and they were so proud to share they had completed it themselves.
My students' goal is obtain more flexible seating to complete our Fixer Upper Kid Style. Through their research they concluded that sitting in desks all day is not the best fit for all learning styles. With the flexible seating choices they have selected, it will give all students many choices throughout the day to keep their minds focused and engaged in new learning.
