Representation matters! It is important to include students' cultural references and backgrounds in each aspect of learning. My students are leaders and activists within the school community and within the local community. When our water fountains tested positive for lead, they wrote to the local officials. When building construction made it difficult for students with disabilities to access parts of the building, they called and emailed officials on the board of education. They care about the opportunity and they care about equity. They want to discuss current topics related to their own cultures. My students are noticeable more engaged in work that reflects their daily lives and experiences. The donations to my project will help them feel seen and heard in my classroom and cultivate their voices as future leaders. The book that I selected fits in directly with the focus of this class while simultaneously responding to the needs they've expressed in school and classroom surveys.
