My students read "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown this past year in a virtual small reading group and they all fell in love with the book! This coming school year, I plan to have students read 3 or 4 different chapter books as a whole class and adding "The Wild Robot" would be an incredible addition for my students to explore complex text in 4th grade. This book is perfect for the beginning of the year to build visualization skills while reading a high quality narrative fiction text. The themes in "The Wild Robot" will make this an excellent book to read at the beginning of the year, as it discusses "love, respect, community, survival, self-reflection, and friendship" all through the contrast of technology and the natural world. This is a perfect topic for my students as they have strong connections in their culture to land and nature. Students have the innate technology skills of the 21st century and "Wild Robot" will lend itself to wonderful class discussions about the contrasts of "wildness" and "technology".
